In recent weather alerts issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Wakefield VA, several coastal flood warnings and high surf advisories have been put in place for various counties in Virginia. These advisories warn of potential inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways, with impacts ranging from shallow flooding to widespread flooding of vulnerable areas.
According to the NWS alerts, the Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect for Inland Worcester County until 7 PM EDT Thursday, with up to one foot of inundation expected in low-lying areas. Similarly, the Coastal Flood Warning is in place for Westmoreland and Northumberland Counties until 1 AM EDT Friday, with around two feet of inundation anticipated in vulnerable areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
Additional Coastal Flood Warnings have been issued for Dorchester, Wicomico, and Somerset Counties, with impacts including an elevated threat of property damage to homes and businesses near the waterfront and shoreline. Water levels are expected to be around two feet above ground level in some areas, leading to road closures and potential flooding of vehicles.
In conjunction with the coastal flooding advisories, High Surf Advisories have been issued for Coastal Worcester County, Accomack, and Northampton Counties, as well as Virginia Beach. These advisories warn of large breaking waves in the surf zone, ranging from 7 to 10 feet, which could result in dangerous swimming and surfing conditions, as well as localized beach erosion.
The NWS alerts emphasize the importance of taking precautions in the affected areas, such as avoiding flooded roads, staying away from the shoreline during high surf conditions, and securing loose objects that could be swept away by strong waves. Residents are advised to stay informed about the changing weather conditions and follow guidance from local authorities to ensure their safety.
As coastal flooding and high surf events continue to pose risks to communities, it is crucial for individuals to remain vigilant and prepared for potential impacts. By heeding the warnings and taking necessary precautions, residents can help mitigate the effects of these weather events and ensure their well-being.
