A High Surf Advisory and Rip Current Risk have been issued for various areas in Puerto Rico, posing significant dangers to residents and visitors alike. The National Weather Service (NWS) in San Juan, Puerto Rico, has warned of large breaking waves of 10 to 14 feet, along with life-threatening rip currents, in multiple locations.
The High Surf Advisory, in effect until 6 AM AST Tuesday, includes vulnerable areas such as Pinones, Luquillo, Aguadilla, Arecibo, Barceloneta, Manati, Vega Baja, San Juan, and Aguada. These high waves can wash over jetties, sweep individuals and pets onto rocks, and result in beach erosion and dangerous swimming conditions.
Simultaneously, a High Rip Current Risk has been identified for the beaches of northern Puerto Rico, with the potential to sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper waters, making it challenging to return to safety. This risk is expected to persist through late Tuesday night.
The impacts of these weather phenomena are severe, with rough surf conditions that can knock individuals down and cause localized beach and dune structure erosion. The NWS emphasizes the need for caution and vigilance in these areas to prevent accidents and ensure personal safety.
Furthermore, a Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for beaches in Douglas, Coos, and Curry Counties, highlighting a high risk of sneaker waves that can unexpectedly knock people off their feet and pull them into the ocean, potentially leading to serious injuries or fatalities.
In contrast, a High Wind Warning in Albuquerque, New Mexico, has been allowed to expire as winds are expected to decrease. However, a Freeze Warning remains in effect for Glorieta Mesa, Harding County, and Northeast Highlands, with sub-freezing temperatures that could harm crops, sensitive vegetation, and outdoor plumbing.
As weather conditions continue to fluctuate, it is crucial for residents and visitors to stay informed about advisories and warnings issued by the NWS and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. By heeding these alerts and being prepared for potential risks, individuals can mitigate the impact of adverse weather events.
