As the effects of climate change become increasingly evident, coastal areas are experiencing more frequent and severe flooding events. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a series of Coastal Flood Advisories and Warnings for several counties in Maryland and Virginia, highlighting the imminent risks posed by tidal flooding.
In Charles and King George Counties, residents are facing the possibility of up to two feet of inundation above ground level due to tidal flooding. This significant water level rise can lead to water reaching yards near Cobb Island and docks near Dahlgren. The situation is exacerbated by tides one and a half to two feet above normal, with high tides expected around 2:28 PM and 2:46 AM.
Similarly, the City of Alexandria and Arlington County are under a Coastal Flood Advisory, with up to one and a half feet of inundation expected. Water is projected to approach the curb near the intersection of King Street and Strand Street in Alexandria, with high tides forecasted at 8:02 PM and 8:22 AM.
Anne Arundel County is also under a Coastal Flood Warning and Advisory, with up to two feet of inundation expected in low-lying areas. Water levels rising to 3.2 feet can lead to flooding of businesses on Dock Street in Annapolis, along with the City Dock parking lot and Compromise Street. Tides one and a half to two feet above normal are anticipated, with high tides at 5:02 PM and 4:59 AM.
In Southeast Harford County, residents are advised of one to three feet of inundation above ground level due to tidal flooding. At 4.5 feet, portions of the Havre de Grace Yacht Basin and Hutchins Park may experience flooding, with tides two and a half to three feet above normal. High tides are expected at 9:32 PM and 9:57 AM.
These Coastal Flood Advisories and Warnings underscore the immediate threat posed by rising sea levels and tidal flooding in coastal regions. As climate change continues to impact weather patterns, communities must be prepared for more frequent and intense flooding events. It is crucial for residents to heed the warnings issued by the NWS and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and mitigate potential damages.
