In the early hours of October 15, 2021, multiple regions across the United States found themselves shrouded in dense fog, leading to hazardous driving conditions and prompting weather advisories from the National Weather Service (NWS). Areas such as Fort Collins, Briggsdale, Greeley, Sterling, and various parts of South Dakota, West Virginia, and Florida were particularly affected by the reduced visibility caused by the fog.
The NWS issued Dense Fog Advisories for these regions, warning of visibility dropping as low as 100 yards in some areas. Motorists were urged to exercise caution due to the limited visibility, which could make driving hazardous. The impacted areas included major roadways such as I-25, US 85, and highway 14, where drivers were likely to encounter challenging conditions.
In addition to the dense fog, coastal regions in the Florida Keys faced a Coastal Flood Statement, predicting minor saltwater flooding in low-lying areas. The statement highlighted the likelihood of flooding on low elevation streets, overflowing storm drains, and overtopped seawalls and docks. Boaters were advised to be cautious of reduced clearance under fixed bridges, while motorists were warned of saltwater mixtures in persistent puddles during high tide.
Furthermore, a Flood Watch was issued for parts of south-central Colorado, including the Eastern San Juan Mountains and the Upper Rio Grande Valley. The watch indicated the potential for flash flooding due to excessive rainfall, with some areas expected to receive 1-2 inches of additional rainfall on already saturated soils. This could lead to flooding of rivers, creeks, and streams, posing risks to low-lying and flood-prone locations.
The NWS also reported dense fog in northeastern South Dakota and west-central Minnesota, with visibilities dropping to around one-quarter mile at times. Travelers in these areas were advised to be prepared for rapidly changing visibility and reduced travel speeds to ensure safe journeys.
As weather patterns continue to evolve, it is crucial for individuals to stay informed about local advisories and take necessary precautions to mitigate risks associated with adverse weather conditions. By heeding the guidance provided by meteorological experts, communities can better prepare for and respond to weather-related challenges.
