As of October 13, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued multiple alerts for coastal areas in Virginia and Maryland due to high surf advisories and coastal flood warnings. The alerts cover various counties and are in effect until different times today, with impacts ranging from inundation above ground level to dangerous swimming and surfing conditions.
The Coastal Flood Warning issued for Maryland’s coastal Worcester County, including Ocean City, and Virginia’s Accomack and Northampton Counties, warns of one to two feet of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. This could result in widespread flooding of vulnerable areas, posing an elevated threat of property damage to homes and businesses. Water levels may rise up to 2 feet in some areas, leading to road closures, threats to homes and businesses, and inland flooding along tidal rivers and bays.
Additionally, a High Surf Advisory has been issued for the same areas, with large breaking waves of 7 to 9 feet expected in the surf zone. This advisory highlights dangerous swimming and surfing conditions, as well as localized beach erosion, emphasizing the need for caution along the coast.
Several Coastal Flood Advisories have also been issued for different counties in Virginia, including New Kent, Gloucester, Middlesex, Mathews, Eastern King William, Eastern King and Queen, Westmoreland, Richmond, Northumberland, Lancaster, Western Essex, and Eastern Essex Counties. These advisories warn of around one foot of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways, leading to shallow flooding in vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline.
In addition, Dorchester, Wicomico, and Somerset Counties in Maryland are under a Coastal Flood Advisory until noon today, with up to one half foot of inundation expected above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
Furthermore, Charles City, Surry, James City, Isle of Wight, Norfolk/Portsmouth, York, Newport News, Hampton/Poquoson Counties, Suffolk, and Chesapeake are under a Coastal Flood Advisory until 8 PM EDT today, with similar impacts of shallow flooding in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline.
The NWS alerts emphasize the importance of staying informed about changing weather conditions, following any evacuation orders, and avoiding flooded areas. Residents in the affected areas are urged to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and protect their property.
