As coastal areas along the East Coast of the United States prepare for a strong coastal storm this weekend, the National Weather Service has issued several flood advisories and warnings to alert residents of potential risks. The storm is expected to bring higher water levels and stronger winds, leading to concerns about coastal flooding and property damage.
In North Carolina, a Coastal Flood Advisory has been issued for areas along the lower Neuse River, Pamlico, Core and Back Sounds, and adjacent tidal creeks. The advisory warns of 1 to 2 feet of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways, potentially causing shallow flooding in areas such as parking lots, parks, and homes adjacent to the waterfront.
Additionally, a Coastal Flood Watch has been issued for areas along the beaches, Pamlico Sound, and adjacent tidal creeks, as well as Ocracoke Island. This watch predicts 2 to 4 feet of inundation above ground level, posing an elevated threat of property damage and potential flooding of homes and businesses. Road closures and flooding of vehicles are also possible, especially along NC 12 where ocean overwash may make portions of the highway inaccessible.
The National Weather Service emphasizes that the exact track and strength of the storm will determine the severity of the coastal flooding. Depending on these factors, Coastal Flood Warning conditions may be met, leading to major impacts from ocean overwash. Residents are urged to stay informed about the forecast and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property.
As climate change continues to influence weather patterns, coastal areas are increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of storms and rising sea levels. It is essential for communities to be proactive in their response to these threats, implementing measures to mitigate risks and adapt to changing environmental conditions.
