The National Weather Service (NWS) in San Juan, Puerto Rico, has issued a High Surf Advisory and a Rip Current Risk warning for the region, effective until the early hours of October 7, 2025. The advisory highlights large breaking waves of 10 to 12 feet, posing a significant threat to coastal areas. The most vulnerable locations include Pinones, Luquillo, Aguadilla, Arecibo, Barceloneta, Manati, Vega Baja, San Juan, and Aguada, among others.
The High Surf Advisory warns of high waves that can wash over jetties, sweep individuals and pets onto jagged rocks, and cause beach erosion. Additionally, rough surf conditions may lead to dangerous swimming situations. On the other hand, the High Rip Current Risk emphasizes life-threatening rip currents along north-facing beaches of Puerto Rico, Culebra, and St. Croix. These currents can pull swimmers away from the shore into deeper waters, making it challenging to return to safety.
In a separate weather event, a Flood Advisory has been issued for a portion of northwest Florida, specifically Escambia County. Heavy rainfall from thunderstorms has caused minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas, with additional rainfall expected to exacerbate the situation. Locations like Seaglades, Chanticleer, Perdido Bay, and others are experiencing or are at risk of flooding due to the excessive rainfall.
Furthermore, the St. Johns River near Astor in Florida remains in Moderate Flood Stage, with forecasts indicating continued flooding due to various factors such as tidal effects, winds, and recent rainfall. The river is expected to remain in Moderate Flood Stage through the week, impacting areas like Cocoa, Sanford, Deland, and Astor.
In South Florida, Coastal Flood Advisories and Rip Current Statements have been issued for Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, Collier, and Monroe counties. These advisories warn of moderate coastal flooding and dangerous rip currents, potentially leading to flooding of lots, parks, and roads, as well as posing risks to swimmers along the coast.
The combination of these weather events underscores the importance of staying informed and taking necessary precautions to ensure safety. Residents and visitors in the affected areas are advised to heed the warnings from the NWS and local authorities, avoid water-related activities in hazardous conditions, and be prepared for potential flooding.
