The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a series of coastal flood warnings and rip current alerts for several coastal regions in the United States. These warnings are in effect from October 6 to October 10, impacting areas such as the lower Cape Fear River in downtown Wilmington, Coastal Horry, Coastal Georgetown Counties, Coastal Pender, Coastal New Hanover Counties, the Northwest Arctic Coast, Shishmaref, and the Bering Strait Coast.
In the lower Cape Fear River, including downtown Wilmington, up to one foot of inundation above ground level is expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways until noon EDT on Tuesday. Similarly, Coastal Horry and Coastal Georgetown Counties may experience minor coastal flooding up to one foot in depth until 11 AM EDT on Tuesday, along with dangerous rip currents until 8 PM EDT.
Coastal Pender and Coastal New Hanover Counties are under a Coastal Flood Advisory, with up to one half foot of inundation above ground level expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways from 7 AM to 10 AM EDT on Tuesday. Rip currents pose a risk until 8 PM EDT.
Moving to the Northwest Arctic Coast, water levels are predicted to rise 4 to 6 feet above the normal high tide line from 7 AM Wednesday to 4 AM AKDT Friday. This rise, caused by west-northwest winds, may lead to road closures, property inundation, and shoreline erosion.
In Shishmaref, water levels are expected to rise 5 to 7 feet above the normal high tide line from 4 PM Tuesday to 4 PM AKDT Thursday, impacting roads, properties, and critical infrastructure. Similar conditions are forecasted for the Bering Strait Coast, with water levels rising 5 to 7 feet above the normal high tide line from 8 AM Tuesday to 4 PM AKDT Thursday, potentially flooding lots, parks, and roads.
These alerts highlight the importance of staying informed and following guidance from local officials to ensure safety during adverse weather conditions. Rip currents and coastal flooding can pose significant risks to individuals, emphasizing the need for caution and preparedness.
