As weather patterns shift and intensify, coastal areas across the United States are facing a series of hazardous conditions. From coastal flooding to dangerous rip currents, several states are under alerts issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) to ensure the safety of residents and visitors.
In North Carolina, a Coastal Flood Advisory has been issued for the lower Cape Fear River, including downtown Wilmington, until 11 AM EDT. The advisory warns of up to half a foot of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways, with minor coastal flooding observed in certain areas.
Simultaneously, a Rip Current Statement has been issued for coastal Georgetown County, South Carolina, highlighting the presence of dangerous rip currents that can sweep swimmers away from shore into deeper waters. The statement is in effect until 8:00 PM EDT, emphasizing the need for caution and awareness among beachgoers.
Moving north to Michigan, a Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for Mason, Oceana, Muskegon, and Ottawa counties, with high wave action, strong currents, and dangerous swimming conditions expected. South-facing beaches such as Grand Haven State Park and Pere Marquette Park in Muskegon are particularly vulnerable, with piers at risk of being heavily swamped by waves.
In Alabama and Florida, a High Surf Advisory and a High Rip Current Risk have been issued for Mobile Coastal, Baldwin Coastal, Escambia Coastal, Santa Rosa Coastal, and Okaloosa Coastal Counties. Large breaking waves of 4 to 6 feet in the surf zone pose dangers to swimmers and surfers, with the risk of dangerous rip currents persisting through Tuesday evening.
Further west, in Louisiana and Texas, a Coastal Flood Advisory has been issued for West Cameron, East Cameron, Southern Calcasieu Parishes in Louisiana, and Lower Jefferson, and Southern Orange Counties in Texas until 1 PM CDT Sunday. Minor coastal flooding is expected, with isolated road closures possible due to flooding of lots, parks, and roads.
Additionally, a Wind Advisory is in effect for Codington, Deuel, Grant, Marshall, and Roberts Counties in South Dakota until 3 PM CDT this afternoon, with west winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 50 mph posing risks of blowing around unsecured objects and potential power outages.
As these weather-related alerts highlight the immediate dangers posed by coastal flooding, rip currents, high surf, and strong winds, it is crucial for residents and visitors in the affected areas to stay informed, heed warnings from local authorities, and prioritize safety when engaging in outdoor activities near the coast.
