The National Weather Service (NWS) in Melbourne, Florida, issued a flood warning on October 2 at 9:23 AM EDT for the St. Johns River near Astor, affecting Lake and Volusia Counties. The river is currently experiencing minor flooding, with moderate flooding forecasted in the coming days.
The rising river levels are attributed to a combination of upstream tidal/surge effects, winds, and heavy rainfall. The uncertainty lies in how much these factors will impact the river’s levels. Areas along the St. Johns River, including Cocoa 9w, Above Lake Harney, Sanford, Deland, and Astor, are expected to face moderate flooding.
At its current stage of 2.8 feet, water is approaching or entering the lowest homes near Wildhog Road and nearby canals. Flooding has also reached the parking lot of the Juno Trail Apartments, portions of Alligator Road and Holiday Road, and the lowest lying yards along Blue Creek. Roads at Astor Landing Campground and Lake Dexter Boat Ramp are beginning to flood, and water is entering lower homes closest to the river on McPherson Lane.
The river is forecasted to rise to a crest of 3.0 feet early Saturday morning, with flood stage set at 2.3 feet. The NWS advises residents to stay informed about the situation and take necessary precautions.
This weather event underscores the importance of preparedness and resilience in the face of natural disasters. Climate change is intensifying the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, making it crucial for communities to prioritize adaptation measures.
