As coastal areas brace for the impact of tidal flooding, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued multiple Coastal Flood Advisories in various states, including Maryland, Virginia, and Florida. These advisories warn of potential inundation above ground level in low-lying areas due to high tides, with impacts ranging from flooded backyards to overtopped seawalls and docks.
In Maryland, Charles and Calvert Counties, as well as King George County in Virginia, are expected to experience up to half a foot of inundation above ground level. Water levels are anticipated to reach backyards, docks, and parking lots, with tides running one and a half to two feet above normal. The NWS highlights specific areas like North Beach, Cobb Island, and Solomons Island as particularly vulnerable to flooding.
Similarly, Anne Arundel County in Maryland faces a Coastal Flood Warning, with up to one foot of inundation expected in low-lying areas. Annapolis may see water approaching businesses on Dock Street and flooding in the City Dock parking lot. The advisory extends until 5 PM EDT Thursday, coinciding with high tides at the U.S. Naval Academy.
In Virginia, the City of Alexandria and Arlington County are under a Coastal Flood Advisory, with up to half a foot of inundation predicted near the intersection of King Street and Strand Street. The advisory is in effect from 1 AM to 7 AM EDT Thursday, aligning with the next high tide at Alexandria at 4:35 AM.
Further south, the Upper Florida Keys are under a Coastal Flood Statement, warning of minor saltwater flooding in low-lying areas until 5 AM EDT Thursday. The statement cautions motorists about saltwater mix in persistent puddles around high tide times.
These advisories come amidst a broader weather pattern that includes strong thunderstorms in Oregon, with wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph posing a hazard to tree limbs and unsecured objects in Dayton, Huntsville, and Turner.
As coastal communities prepare for potential flooding and storm impacts, it is crucial to heed the warnings issued by the NWS and take necessary precautions to ensure safety and minimize property damage.
