As the fall season progresses, coastal areas in North Carolina are experiencing adverse weather conditions, prompting the issuance of multiple advisories and warnings by the National Weather Service (NWS) Newport/Morehead City. The region, particularly West Carteret, Coastal Onslow, East Carteret, Ocracoke Island, Hatteras Island, and the Northern Outer Banks, is currently under the influence of dangerous rip currents, high surf, and coastal flooding.
The NWS has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory, a High Surf Advisory, and a Beach Hazards Statement for various counties and islands in North Carolina. The Coastal Flood Advisory warns of up to 1 to 2 feet of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways, with minor flooding possible. The High Surf Advisory indicates large breaking waves ranging from 5 to 12 feet in the surf zone, posing risks for dangerous swimming and surfing conditions, as well as localized beach erosion. Additionally, the Beach Hazards Statement highlights the presence of dangerous rip currents along the coast.
The impacts of these weather phenomena are significant, with shallow flooding expected in some areas, including roads, parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes adjacent to the waterfront. The combination of moderate oceanside coastal flooding, soundside flooding, and high surf can lead to property damage and threaten homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure. Furthermore, rip currents pose a serious threat to swimmers and surfers, potentially dragging them into deeper waters.
In particular, portions of Highway 12 on Ocracoke and Hatteras Islands may become impassable due to ocean overwash, especially during high tide. Residents and visitors in the affected areas are advised to exercise caution, stay informed about local weather updates, and follow any evacuation orders or safety recommendations issued by authorities.
The current weather conditions in North Carolina serve as a reminder of the dynamic and sometimes hazardous nature of coastal environments. Understanding and preparing for these weather events are crucial for ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals living in or visiting coastal regions.
