The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued multiple advisories for high surf, dangerous rip currents, and coastal flooding along the eastern coastlines of the United States. These advisories are in effect from September 30th to October 2nd, impacting various counties in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington.
In Maryland and Virginia, a High Surf Advisory warns of large breaking waves ranging from 5 to 11 feet in the surf zone, creating dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion. Additionally, a Beach Hazards Statement highlights the risk of dangerous rip currents, urging caution for beachgoers in these areas.
Further south, Coastal Flood Advisories have been issued for low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways in counties such as Isle of Wight, Norfolk/Portsmouth, Newport News, and Hampton/Poquoson in Virginia. These advisories predict up to one foot of inundation above ground level, leading to shallow flooding in vulnerable locations and a low threat of property damage.
Moving up the coast to Washington, the NWS has issued a High Surf Advisory for the northern Washington Coast and Grays Harbor County Coast zones. Large breaking waves of 15 to 18 feet are expected, posing a risk of significant beach erosion and potential dangers for individuals near beaches, jetties, and other structures.
In California, a Beach Hazards Statement has been released for Coastal Del Norte, Northern Humboldt Coast, and Southwestern Humboldt Counties. A mid-period northwest swell is forecasted to bring waves of 11 to 13 feet at 13 seconds, increasing the threat of greater than normal wave run-up on beaches and posing risks to unsuspecting beachgoers.
These weather advisories serve as crucial warnings for residents and visitors to coastal areas, emphasizing the importance of staying informed and taking necessary precautions to ensure safety. As climate change continues to influence weather patterns, events like high surf, rip currents, and coastal flooding may become more frequent and intense, underscoring the need for proactive measures to mitigate risks and protect vulnerable communities.
