As the fall season progresses, coastal areas in Virginia and Maryland are currently facing challenging weather conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued Coastal Flood Advisory and High Surf Advisory for various locations, warning residents and visitors about potential hazards.
In Virginia Beach, the Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until October 1 at 9:00 PM EDT. The advisory predicts up to one foot of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Additionally, dangerous rip currents and large breaking waves of 7 to 12 feet in the surf zone are expected, leading to rough surf conditions and a high risk of rip currents.
Eastern Currituck County is also under a Coastal Flood Advisory until October 1 at 6:00 PM EDT. Similar to Virginia Beach, up to one half foot of inundation above ground level is anticipated in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. The advisory warns of dangerous rip currents, large breaking waves, and shallow flooding in vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline.
In Maryland Beaches County and Accomack County, a Beach Hazards Statement is in effect until October 1 at 8:00 PM EDT. The statement highlights dangerous rip currents, large breaking waves of 6 to 11 feet in the surf zone, and the potential for rough surf conditions and a high risk of rip currents.
Furthermore, Northampton County is under a Coastal Flood Advisory until October 1 at 11:00 PM EDT. Similar to the other areas, up to one foot of inundation above ground level is expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. The advisory also mentions dangerous rip currents, large breaking waves, and shallow flooding in vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline.
In a separate weather event, the NWS Fairbanks in Alaska issued a Special Weather Statement predicting snow in the White Mountains starting early Thursday morning. Accumulations of 4 to 9 inches are possible through Friday night along the Steese Highway Summits, with the highest accumulations near Eagle Summit.
These weather advisories and statements serve as crucial warnings for residents and visitors to these coastal and mountainous regions. It is essential to heed the advice of local authorities, stay informed about changing weather conditions, and take necessary precautions to ensure safety.
