As heavy rainfall continues to pummel various regions across the United States, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued multiple flood advisories in response to the excessive precipitation. From Kentucky to Texas, the impact of the ongoing thunderstorms is causing minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas, with dangerous flows over low-water crossings and water over roadways becoming a significant concern.
In western Kentucky, including Todd County, Doppler radar has indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms, with between 2 and 3.5 inches of rain already fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 1.5 inches are expected, further exacerbating the flooding situation. Similar conditions are observed in south central Kentucky, particularly in Logan County, where minor flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly. Between 1 and 2 inches of rain have already fallen, with an additional 0.5 to 1 inch projected to intensify the flooding.
The impact of the heavy rainfall extends to Puerto Rico as well, with Coamo, Guayanilla, Juana Diaz, Penuelas, Ponce, Salinas, Santa Isabel, and Villalba experiencing minor flooding in low-lying areas. Up to 3 inches of rain have fallen over the last 6-12 hours, with an additional 1 to 2 inches expected to further elevate the risk of flooding in the region.
In southern Atascosa County, Texas, including locations like Campbellton, minor flooding is also ongoing or anticipated due to heavy rain from thunderstorms. Between 1 and 3 inches of rain have already fallen, with additional rainfall amounts up to 2 inches predicted to contribute to the flooding.
While some areas like Estill County in east central Kentucky have seen the end of heavy rain, with flooding no longer posing a threat, other regions such as Butler, Edmonson, Logan, and Warren Counties in south central Kentucky continue to grapple with minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas.
As these flood advisories persist, it is crucial for residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant and heed any road closures or safety warnings issued by local authorities. The relentless rainfall underscores the importance of preparedness and resilience in the face of extreme weather events, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to mitigate the impact of such natural phenomena.
