The National Weather Service (NWS) in El Paso, Texas, has issued multiple flood advisories and flash flood warnings for various parts of El Paso County and neighboring areas. The alerts are in effect until late on September 19th and early on September 20th, urging residents to exercise caution and be prepared for potential flash flooding.
According to the NWS, thunderstorms with heavy rainfall have been affecting parts of the El Paso area, particularly the east side, Fort Bliss, Clint, and surrounding areas. The excessive rainfall has led to urban and small stream flooding, causing rises in small streams, normally dry arroyos, and water over roadways. The risk of more serious flooding is gradually decreasing as the storms move eastward.
In addition to the flood advisories, a flash flood warning has been issued for North Central El Paso County, including areas around Fort Bliss and East El Paso. The warning highlights the dangers of flash flooding caused by thunderstorms, which can impact urban areas, arroyos, highways, streets, and underpasses. Residents in affected areas are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
Furthermore, southeastern El Paso County and western portions of Hudspeth County are under a flood advisory due to arroyo and small stream flooding caused by heavy rainfall. Low-lying and poor drainage areas are at risk of minor flooding, with rises in small streams and normally dry arroyos expected. Some low-water crossings may become impassable, affecting locations like Tornillo, Fort Hancock, Acala, and McNary.
As severe weather events like these become more frequent and intense, it is crucial for communities to stay informed, prepared, and resilient in the face of natural disasters. Climate change is amplifying the impacts of extreme weather events, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to mitigate risks and protect lives and property.
The NWS continues to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary. Residents are encouraged to follow official weather alerts and guidelines, avoid flooded areas, and seek shelter in case of severe weather conditions.
