As severe weather patterns continue to impact different parts of the United States, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued multiple alerts warning residents of potential hazards. From coastal flood warnings to high surf advisories and severe thunderstorm warnings, various regions are on high alert for dangerous weather conditions.
In Wakefield, Virginia, coastal flood warnings have been issued for Surry, James City, Isle of Wight, Newport News, Hampton/Poquoson Counties, and Suffolk. The warnings are in effect until 2 AM EDT Wednesday, with up to one foot of inundation above ground level expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. The flooding poses an elevated threat of property damage to homes and businesses, with water levels reaching 1 to 2 feet in some areas, potentially closing roads and threatening structures.
In Northampton County, Virginia, a high surf advisory is in place until 3 AM EDT Wednesday, with large breaking waves of 4 to 9 feet in the surf zone. Dangerous rip currents, large breaking waves, and strong longshore currents are expected, leading to hazardous swimming and surfing conditions as well as localized beach erosion.
Maryland beaches are also under a high surf advisory until 6 AM EDT Wednesday, with large breaking waves of 7 to 10 feet in the surf zone. Similar to Northampton County, dangerous swimming and surfing conditions, along with localized beach erosion, are anticipated.
Furthermore, severe thunderstorm warnings have been issued in Goodland, Kansas, and Hastings, Nebraska, with the potential for 60 mph wind gusts and hail. These storms can cause damage to vehicles, roofs, siding, and trees, impacting various locations in the warned areas.
In Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a flash flood warning has been issued for northwestern Iowa, with heavy rain expected to cause flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, and underpasses. Residents in Sheldon, Sanborn, Ashton, Melvin, and Archer are urged to exercise caution.
As extreme weather events continue to unfold across different regions, it is crucial for residents to stay informed, heed warnings from local authorities, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and well-being.
