As severe weather patterns continue to impact various regions, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued multiple alerts for floods and thunderstorms across different states. The alerts, ranging from Flood Advisories to Flash Flood Warnings, highlight the imminent threat of excessive rainfall and potential flash flooding in several areas.
In South Central New Mexico and Western Texas, Flood Advisories have been issued for Dona Ana, Otero, and El Paso counties. Doppler radar has indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms, with minor flooding already occurring or expected to begin shortly. Low-lying and poor drainage areas are at risk, with ponding of water in urban locations likely.
Similarly, a Flash Flood Warning has been issued for Southeastern Dona Ana County, Southwestern Otero County, and North Central El Paso County. Thunderstorms producing heavy rain have already resulted in between 1 and 1.5 inches of rainfall, with additional amounts expected. Flash flooding of small creeks, streams, urban areas, highways, and underpasses is a significant concern.
In Southwest Nebraska, a Flood Warning has been issued for Red Willow County, with urban area and small stream flooding expected due to excessive rainfall. The public has reported heavy rain in McCook, with streams rising and flooding imminent or ongoing. The excess runoff from earlier rainfall is causing water levels to rise, impacting low-lying and flood-prone locations.
Additionally, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for eastern Butler and west central Saunders Counties in Nebraska. A severe thunderstorm with 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail is moving north, posing risks of hail damage to vehicles and wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.
Along the Maryland Beaches, a High Surf Advisory has been issued, warning of large breaking waves of 7 to 10 feet in the surf zone and a high risk of rip currents. Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions, as well as localized beach erosion, are expected.
As these severe weather events unfold, it is crucial for residents in the affected areas to stay informed, heed official warnings, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and well-being.
