The National Weather Service in El Paso Tx/Santa Teresa has issued multiple Flash Flood Warnings for southeastern Dona Ana County in south-central New Mexico. These warnings are in effect until the early hours of September 17th, with life-threatening flash flooding expected in the area.
Doppler radar and automated rain gauges have indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 0.5 and 1 inch of rain has already fallen, with additional amounts of up to 0.5 inches possible. The affected locations, including Vado, Del Cerro, and High Valley, are at risk of experiencing dangerous flash flooding. Emergency management reports flooding has already made roads impassable in the Vado area, emphasizing the severity of the situation. Runoff from the High Valley area is expected to continue causing flooding even after the rain subsides.
The Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 1:30 AM MDT, with a FLASH FLOOD EMERGENCY declared for Vado. Residents are urged to seek higher ground immediately due to the life-threatening nature of the flash flooding.
The hazardous conditions are a result of thunderstorms producing flash flooding, as confirmed by radar and emergency management sources. The impact of this weather event includes life-threatening flash flooding of low-lying areas, streets, and arroyos.
