The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Coastal Flood Warning and High Surf Advisory for various counties and cities along the Virginia coastline. The warning is in effect until September 17, with significant impacts expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
According to the NWS, the Coastal Flood Warning predicts one to three feet of inundation above ground level, while the High Surf Advisory warns of large breaking waves of 7 to 10 feet in the surf zone. The affected areas include Surry, James City, Isle of Wight Counties, as well as the cities of Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, and Suffolk.
The potential impacts of these weather events are widespread flooding in vulnerable areas, posing an elevated threat of property damage to homes and businesses near the waterfront and shoreline. Water levels are expected to be 1 to 3 feet above ground in some areas, leading to road closures and potential threats to properties. Additionally, dangerous swimming and surfing conditions are expected, along with localized beach erosion.
In addition to the Coastal Flood Warning and High Surf Advisory, a Wind Advisory has been issued for various counties in Virginia, with gusty winds of up to 30 mph and gusts up to 45 mph. The advisory warns of potential power outages and advises securing loose objects to prevent damage.
Moreover, an Air Quality Alert has been declared by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, with ozone levels expected to be in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups range. Active children, adults, and individuals with respiratory conditions are advised to limit outdoor exposure and take necessary precautions.
As extreme weather events become more frequent and severe, it is crucial for individuals and communities to stay informed and prepared. Following the recommendations of local authorities and weather services can help mitigate risks and ensure the safety of all residents.
