The National Weather Service (NWS) in Flagstaff, Arizona, issued a flash flood warning on August 23 at 5:09 PM MST for the Dragon Bravo North and South Canyon Washes. Doppler radar indicated heavy rain had ceased, with between 0.25 and 0.75 inches of rain already fallen. Additional light rainfall amounts up to 0.1 inches were possible in the warned area, potentially leading to flash flooding.
The excessive rainfall over the burn scar could result in debris flow moving through the North and South Canyon Washes, consisting of rock, mud, vegetation, and other loose materials. The hazard identified was thunderstorms producing flash flooding in and around the Dragon Bravo North and South Canyon Washes, with life-threatening flash flooding expected in the area.
Locations expected to experience flash flooding included Grand Canyon National Park, Saddle Mountain Wilderness, and the Colorado River between river miles 21 and 32. Various recreation areas, campgrounds, creeks, washes, and rivers in the vicinity were also at risk.
The NWS urged residents and visitors in the affected areas to take immediate precautions and stay informed about the evolving weather conditions. Flash floods can occur rapidly and without warning, posing significant dangers to individuals and property in their path.
As climate change continues to impact weather patterns globally, extreme weather events like flash floods are becoming more frequent and severe. It is crucial for communities to prioritize preparedness, resilience, and adaptation strategies to mitigate the risks associated with such events.
