These murals, located in the school’s entryway, depict scenes that boldly challenge the prevailing forces of war, industrialization, and capitalism during that era. Created with chalk and Wilson’s fingertips, some of the chalk was even supplied by the students themselves, adding a special touch of community involvement to these remarkable artworks.
The significance of these murals is not lost on the local community, as Woodrow Wilson Middle School was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996, with Wilson’s murals playing a crucial role in this recognition. Now, for the first time since 2020, visitors have the opportunity to admire these thought-provoking pieces of history up close.
The tour will take place at the Vigo County History Center, offering a chance to delve into the past and appreciate the artistic and historical value of Wilson’s work. Admission is free for members of the Vigo County History Center and Indiana Landmarks, making it an accessible and enriching experience for all. For non-members, tickets are priced at $7.00 for adults and $6.00 for seniors over 60.
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to step back in time and witness the power of art and history intertwining at Woodrow Wilson Middle School. Join us on August 5th at the Vigo County History Center for a journey through the past that will leave you inspired and enlightened.
