The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued Severe Thunderstorm Watch Number 428 for portions of Eastern Colorado, the Nebraska Panhandle, and Southeast Wyoming. This watch is in effect from Tuesday morning until early Tuesday evening, encompassing a period from 10:50 AM to 5:00 PM MDT.
The primary threats associated with this severe thunderstorm watch include scattered large hail, with isolated very large hail events of up to 3 inches in diameter possible. Additionally, scattered damaging wind gusts of up to 70 mph are expected, with the potential for a tornado or two.
Thunderstorms are forecasted to rapidly develop over the foothills and mountains of central Colorado and southern Wyoming. These storms are then expected to track slowly eastward through the afternoon, posing a risk of large hail and potentially a tornado or two.
The severe thunderstorm watch area spans approximately 55 statute miles east and west of a line from 40 miles east-northeast of Douglas, Wyoming, to 30 miles south-southeast of Trinidad, Colorado. Residents within this region should remain vigilant and be prepared for threatening weather conditions.
It is crucial for individuals within the watch area to stay informed of weather updates, listen for any warnings, and take necessary precautions. Severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes and other hazardous conditions, so it is important to be prepared for any potential risks.
According to the SPC, aviation conditions may also be affected, with a few severe thunderstorms capable of producing hail up to 3 inches in diameter, extreme turbulence, surface wind gusts reaching 60 knots, and cumulonimbus clouds with maximum tops up to 500. The mean storm motion vector is forecasted to be 27030.
As the situation develops, individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, follow any official warnings or statements, and take appropriate safety measures to protect themselves and their property.
