The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has issued Severe Thunderstorm Watch Number 355 for parts of Northeast Colorado, the Nebraska Panhandle, and Southeast Wyoming. The watch is in effect this Monday afternoon and evening from 2:10 PM until 8:00 PM MDT.
The primary threats associated with this severe thunderstorm watch include scattered damaging winds with isolated significant gusts up to 75 mph possible, as well as scattered large hail with isolated very large hail events up to 2 inches in diameter possible. Thunderstorms are expected to develop and intensify throughout the afternoon, spreading eastward into the evening. Both supercells and multicells are anticipated, with large hail and severe gusts being the main hazards from the stronger storms.
The severe thunderstorm watch area covers approximately 75 miles east and west of a line from 50 miles north of Torrington, Wyoming, to 35 miles south of Akron, Colorado. Residents in these areas should remain vigilant for threatening weather conditions and stay informed by listening to local weather reports and updates.
It is essential to remember that a Severe Thunderstorm Watch indicates that conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms in and near the watch area. While tornadoes are not the primary concern, they can still occur during severe thunderstorms.
Aviation interests should also take precautions, as severe thunderstorms within the watch area could produce hail up to 2 inches in diameter, extreme turbulence, and surface wind gusts up to 65 knots.
